Functional Safety acc. to ISO 26262 for Project Managers and Engineers

Motivation
The essential driver for establishing functional safety in your products is product liability: in Europe product liability law is subject to §4 GPSG; in addition countries have individual regulations in place. Predominantly these require the manufacturers to adhere to state-of-the-art development which, from a legal perspective, includes conformance to safety standards. Incompliance may otherwise lead to state prosecutor investigation which, ultimately, might further result in a charge of bodily harm with fatal consequences against individuals in the organization.
With respect to product accreditation, automobiles currently do not need to receive authority approval as is the case in industry domains such as medical devices, aeronautics, and air traffic control.
For these reasons leading car manufacturers have set the goal of only distributing automobiles from 2011 on that have been developed according to ISO 26262, an automotive-specific derivative of the general worldwide safety standard IEC 61508. This means that all OEMs and tier n suppliers are expected to adapt their development and product lifecycle processes to comply with this automotive-specific standard.
